LOCATION: Ross Creek Trailhead Parking Lot

START TIME: 05:00 A.M. (sunrise is 06:45 A.M.)

The Valkyrie Relay will begin with a 10.2-mile distance Trail Race, Southbound along the East side of the Jordanelle Reservoir. This segment starts in darkness so a headlamp will be required to run this segment of the event. Trail Race competitors are the pace setters, benefiting from cooler weather as they lengthen the field. Maneuvering space will be a premium at the first transition at the end of the Trail Race. If you can get ahead, do it.

Course Map

The Trail Race segment will start at the Ross Creek Trailhead near the Northeast side of the reservoir and will end at the transition point for both Paddle and Road Race segments at the Southeast arm of the reservoir near the Rock Cliff Campgrounds. The Utah State Park maintained trail is gravel and soil and wide enough for up to 3 runners abreast. It is exposed sage brush and scrub oak terrain with direct sun by 07:00 A.M. The total distance for this segment is an undulating 10.2 miles with a max elevation of 6,400 ft just after mile 6, and minimum of just under 6,200 ft. The total (sum) elevation gain is 1322 ft.

Parking Information

The limited parking at the Rock Cliff Campgrounds put-in is for Valkyrie Relay™ operational vehicles and team boat and competitor load & unloading only. Nearest dedicated parking for competitors and their gear is at The Homestead Resort or the Finish Line at Soldier Hollow. Some vehicle staging is available nearby (driver remains with vehicle) as drivers wait to load boats, trail racers and paddlers. (see diagram) *Parking is limited along the course so we highly suggest that your team travel together as much as possible, ideally having a team vehicles(s) with non-competing drivers that can pick-up and drop off team members and gear along the course as the race progresses. Please review section on event parking and the Valkyrie Relay Wingmates.

Transition Information

At the Trail Race completion timing sensor, competitors will tag their team’s Paddle segment counterpart waiting at the Paddle staging area with their canoe or kayak. Trail Race and/or Road Race competitors may assist their Paddle teammate in moving the boat in and back out of the water.
